On September 12, 2016, at approximately 11:18 a.m., while on patrol in the area of Harbor Boulevard and Heil Avenue, a Fountain Valley Officer observed a male, later identified as Mario Gam Acevedo, drive a Jeep Cherokee into the 7/11 Store parking lot at that intersection. As the Officer walked up to talk to Acevedo, he accelerated rapidly over the landscaped parkway and sidewalk and proceeded westbound onto Heil Avenue. A vehicle pursuit ensued; and Acevedo traveled west on Heil Avenue, then north onto Euclid Avenue, drove over the curb and entered Mile Square Park. Acevedo proceeded through the green areas of the Park before crashing through a fence onto David L. Baker Golf Course. He eventually drove into a pond, overturning the car. Acevedo got out of the car and fled on foot but was detained by several golfers until Officers arrived.
Officers determined that Acevedo (34) from Santa Ana is on parole, and the vehicle was a reported stolen. Officers discovered a significant amount of narcotics secreted in Acevedo’s pants, and a replica firearm and burglary tools were found inside the vehicle. Acevedo was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the collision. Investigation is ongoing. Incident #16-37850.
