After-the-Fact Permit Process

If you have made significant improvements to your property, chances are permits were required. However, when asking
for bids for this work, you may have heard something like this: “Would you like a bid that includes permits?” or “The bid didn’t include permits. Adding permits will cost more.” While it is tempting to save a few dollars, there are consequences and potential safety considerations when a permit is not obtained.

In instances where work that requires a permit has been completed without permits, the procedures contained in this document may be used to gain acceptance of the “as-built” or “after the fact” work. The responsibility for compliance lies with the property owner. The City enforces code requirements in effect at the time of permit application to protect the general public welfare and to protect current and future owners and/or occupants of the property.
